Personality and Teaching/Learning Style Inventories
According to the Meyers-Briggs Personality test, my personality is closest to the ISFJ stereotype, indicating I am:
“interested in knowledge and experience, particularly in relation to family, friends and colleagues. [I am] a quiet, serious observer of people, listening intently and getting to know a great deal about them. [I] pay attention to their emotions and feelings, and [am] keenly aware of the state of relationships between them and [I] take [my] responsibilities to them very seriously” (Team Technology, 2016).
Looking at each of the four areas of the test (extraversion vs. introversion, sensation vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, and judgement vs. perception), my results show preferences for introversion, sensation, feeling, and judgement.
How did your personality affect your choice of content area?
My personality drove me to seek out extensive knowledge and experience in the visual arts, and compels me to take my responsibilities to those around me very seriously. Choosing the visual arts as a content area allows me to share my knowledge and experience with those around me, and fulfilling my responsibilities to my students gives me a strong sense of purpose.
How does or will your personality affect your relationships with your students?
I relate to my students as colleagues, which has both benefits and drawbacks. The benefits are that I build a positive rapport with my students, they are encouraged to be creative and learn from one another, and they develop a high degree of independence. The drawbacks is that classroom management becomes more difficult when there is less hierarchy in the classroom.
How will your teaching and learning style affect your teaching and your students’ abilities to be successful?
I have a very strong preference for visual learning, a moderate preference for global learning, and a fairly well balanced preference between active versus reflective learning, and sensing versus intuitive learning. Because of my preferences for visual and global learning, those approaches will feel more natural. I will have to be careful not to ignore their counterparts—verbal and sequential instruction—and will have to be intentional about addressing all learning styles so all students have an equal opportunity to be successful.
